Two days after we got back from Serbia, Samantha and I decided to take a trip to Meteora, in central Greece. We hopped on what is the equivalent to the greyhound and took that to the town of Kalambaka, at the foot of Meteora.
Meteora is known for its large rock formations and the monasteries on top of them that look like they just miraculously appeared there over night. This is the second largest complex Eastern Orthodox monasteries next to Mount Athos, which we visited about a month ago. We went inside 2 monasteries, The Holy Monasteries of Great Meteoron and St. Stephen.
When we first got there, Samantha and I hiked to the top of the cliffs to visit the Holy Trinity monastery, but it was closed. On our way to St. Stephens, we met a nice Australian girl, Keafa. She was traveling alone so we decided a little more company would be nice! That night we went to an early dinner, gyros of course, and decided to meet back up at the town square the next morning. We got a cab to the top of the largest rock pillar and visited Great Meteoron. From there, we walked from one to the other, looking down on the city and feeling like we were on top of the world. We left that evening after 2 long days of hiking and walking around, but knowing the trip was definitely worth it.
These rock pillars are huge, and some of the most amazing things I have ever seen. It is hard not to see what God was talking about when he said his creation was good. Everywhere I go I am continuously reminded of the beauty of God’s design, and how lucky I am to be living in it.
