Happy Birthday, America.

Yesterday, Robyn and I got the pleasure of getting personal surf lessons from Trevor and his friend Mike. I not sure if you know this... but I got up surfing once. Just one time, and I'm pretty sure I was up for about 3 seconds all together. But, that counts, right..?

Regardless, Robyn and I headed down to Huntington Beach for a little surfing action. Once in our wet suits, Robyn's too baggy, mine too tight, we paddled out into the ocean to catch a wave or two. Which is the exact opposite of what really happened. Sitting out there for 3 hours, one would think there would be at least one wave we could practice on, but every time we turned around, waves were crashing on either side of us, so when we would move to our right or left, they would all of a sudden stop, all together. It was like the ocean knew we had never done this before and wanted to play games with us.

But, my favorite part was sitting on the surf board, soaking in the sun and serenity of the ocean. It gave "laying out at the beach" a whole new meaning. I could have stayed there for hours longer if I wasn't about to turn in to a brick of salt.

Despite my hope of becoming a professional surfer, I had an amazing time. The day ended at a small taco shack, the Golden Spoon for some frozen yogurt and hanging out with Trevor's roommates. The whole drive home Robyn and I couldn't stop talking about how much fun we had. So much fun, in fact, that we decided to spend the 4th of July weekend down there, most likely just sitting on the surf boards, pretending to be badass.

The moral of the story is not that I am a bad surfer (although, I'm sure that is not what you were thinking), but how much fun I had trying something new. For a while, I felt like my sense of adventure had just up and walked away from me. But, something triggered that adventure bug in me yesterday, and I am so excited to be down here once again.

I hope everyone has a safe and fun 4th of July. May you be jealous that I am playing beach volleyball, busting out my mad BBQ skills, and watching the fireworks on the beach (only because I'm secretly jealous that everyone else gets to be with their family and I don't).
